- Greg Commander,

Commander Peace Academy

The
Story

Greg Commander is an entrepreneur, author, motivational speaker, and community activist who believes in “Changing Lives, One Mind at a Time.”

His passion for life is contagious to everyone who knows him. After spending 18 years in prison, he made a promise to God that he would dedicate himself to building his community. For many years, he worked tirelessly in the schools and neighborhoods of High Point, North Carolina, sharing his knowledge and life experiences to inspire and encourage at-risk boys and men to better themselves and their lives.

He founded Commander Peace Academy, Inc. in 2017 with the mission to serve as a catalyst to connect community organizations in support of public safety and youth development, fostering peace in our communities.

The objective of the various supportive programs that he leads, such as the High Point Community Men's Huddle and CPA Boxing Club, is to positively impact the lives of underserved African American males residing in High Point.

The Men's Huddle aims to empower and train men by increasing their involvement in their communities and developing strategies related to education, youth behavior, mentorship, civic affairs, economic mobility, and mental and emotional health. The group uses their skills and resources in a unified manner to strengthen their families and communities.

He endeavors to provide the youth in the CPA Boxing Club with life skills, discipline, and character development to prevent them from following the same path of destruction that he once followed. He wishes someone had given him these skills earlier.

As part of his community outreach efforts, he has made several appearances on radio and TV news stations, including 90.1 FM (Busta Brown), 97.1 FM (Renee Vaughn), and Channel 2, FOX 8. He has visited various Guilford County Schools, Youth Detention Centers, Churches, and other Youth Organizations in North Carolina and Chicago, Illinois to talk about the importance of education, gang prevention, and the dangers of "street life" to both young people and adults.

Commander highlights the value of education and shares his personal experience. He earned his G.E.D. while in prison and subsequently obtained a bachelor's degree in counseling from Laurel University, High Point, N.C. in May 2015. He was also awarded the Laurel University Wreath Award, which is one of the most prestigious and recognized awards.

He believes that “it's not a moment, it’s a movement” and will continue on his journey of improving the community.
